What Is llms.txt and Does Your Website Need It?

llms.txt is a proposed Markdown file placed at the root of a website, for example yourdomain.com/llms.txt. It is intended to give AI systems a concise, curated route to a site’s most useful content.

The proposal is experimental. Major search and AI platforms have not documented llms.txt as a ranking, citation, or inclusion signal, so its value should be assessed accordingly.

What goes in an llms.txt file

The llms.txt proposal specifies a Markdown structure, not a company-info template:

• An H1 with the project or site name
• A short summary in a blockquote
• Optional additional context in plain paragraphs
• H2 sections with lists of links to the pages most relevant to that section, such as documentation, services, or case studies

The intent is to give a language model curated context during inference. This is useful for sites like documentation hubs, where a full crawl is expensive or noisy, rather than to summarise contact details and service lists the way a company profile page would.

Does every website need one?

Not yet, and adoption is still early. It is low effort: a static text file, no build process, no plugin, and it costs little to have one ready while the format matures. If your site already has clear, accurate content, writing an llms.txt is mostly a matter of summarising what is already true rather than creating anything new.

As of writing, OpenAI’s own publisher and developer documentation describes OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, and robots.txt for discovery and crawl control. It does not list llms.txt as a requirement for appearing in ChatGPT Search. Google is similarly explicit that no new “AI text files” are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. That does not make llms.txt pointless, but it does mean treating it as an emerging, unproven convention rather than a confirmed signal.

What it does not replace

Structured data describes the entities and visible content of individual pages.
